The tenth annual Beyond the Gates: Preparing for Life and Work after Sewanee weekend was a highly successful event staffed by nearly 45 alumni and parent participants. They assisted 81 students (juniors and seniors) in preparing for life after Sewanee through a series of highly informative panels, practice interviews, resume reviews, instruction on networking etiquette and business dining etiquette, industry-specific panels, and plenty of time for building relationships. To see all the photos from the event, please see the album on Facebook. (Facebook account not required to view.)
The participants were inspired at Friday's dinner by The Rev. Maryetta Anschutz, C'97, the founder and head of the Episcopal School of Los Angeles. She shared moments in her life that pointed her toward serving children and encouraged those present to use their experiences and time at Sewanee to discover their calling and the ways that they can positively impact their communities after graduation.
During the ten years of the Beyond the Gates program, 806 students have participated and been educated by 210 alumni and parent participants. Sixty students participated during both their junior and senior years, and 80 of the alumni and parents have participated multiple times. John Clark, C'82, and Merrill Stewart, a parent of two graduates, have participated nine out of the ten years. Parent of a graduate, Virginia Johnson, has presented the business dining etiquette and networking etiquette portions of the weekend six times.
