Late this week, our staff members have experienced three examples of the power of the Sewanee network.
A C'16 graduate is completing his master's in biostatistics at Harvard's Chan School of Public Health. He reached out to a member of our staff for networking help, and she suggested he talk with an alumna from the Class of 2002 who completed the same degree from Harvard in 2011. She connected him with her husband, also a Sewanee alum with a PhD from Harvard, who is an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he holds appointments in the Department of Health Policy and the Department of Medicine. His interdisciplinary research focuses on the development, implementation and evaluation of health care reforms at the state and federal level. He hired the C'16 graduate to join his team.
A graduating senior visited our office last week to start her job search. An International and Global Studies major with German language skills, she hopes to work in Birmingham in a business with ties to Germany. A member of our staff suggested she contact a faithful parent of two Sewanee graduates; this parent has volunteered for our annual Beyond the Gates event ten times and answers the call whenever we send students his way. (Thanks, Merrill!) He quickly responded to the senior and connected her with a member of the Birmingham community who does business with BMW and Mercedes, writing in his introductory message, "Any Sewanee graduate can communicate well and is trained to be a strategic thinker, two traits that I think would serve you well depending upon any open positions within your company." Her resume was requested immediately, and conversations will move forward.
Lastly, a C'88 alum and current parent wrote this morning to alert us to an opening with his company. A member of our staff did a quick LinkedIn search and found two alumni with the industry experience and regional residence that were needed. The names were shared, the C'88 alum actually knows one of the alumni suggested even though they graduated 30 years apart, and he sent a message through LinkedIn this morning about the opening.
And that was just in the past two days!
We have witnessed hundreds of stories of the power of connection through the Sewanee family over the years. It's pretty impressive to watch unfold.
