Alumni Mallory Ervin C'09, Rondal Richardson C'91, Jay Williams C'94, and friend of Sewanee Mike Shepherd were on campus on Friday, February 22, 2013 for this semester's Smith Career Day which focused on Careers in the Entertainment Industry. They had lunch with students, shared advice during a panel and informally during the networking reception, and a few students had individual time with the four during practice interview sessions. During the panel, they shared great advice:

 Be good at being yourself.

Know your message and be able to articulate it. Know your strengths and your liabilities.

When you get settled, find a charitable organization and volunteer. You'll meet people in a wide range of careers who may be helpful in your new city.

When you get time with someone in the entertainment industry, ask them about their culture to ensure that you'd be a good fit.

Read Billboard magazine for the music industry or Hollywood Reporter for theatre/television/movie industries.

The event was co-sponsored by our office and the Babson Center for Global Commerce and suppored by the Smith Fund generously endowed by Joel A. Smith III, C'67. We are grateful for the time and attention provided by the four members of the Sewanee family from Nashville!

In his public address yesterday, he ended with addressing what students really want to know: "How do I get a job?" He offered these final words of advice:

It's been a month since Beyond the Gates 2013, and we've had time to reflect, critique, and plan for next year's event. Just yesterday, a long-time Beyond the Gates volunteer and internship sponsor wrote to say, "I continue to get wonderful, heart-warming, personal, handwritten notes from Sewanee students whom I interviewed at Beyond the Gates. Wow, are these kids great!"

Another volunteer remarked, "My firm doesn't offer internships and doesn't employ people right out of college, but if we did, I would be keen to hire from the group I met at Beyond the Gates."

The alumni and parents who attend are very impressed with the students, and the students who attend are impressed by the generosity and support of the alumni and parent volunteers.

One student wrote, "I learned so much from the weekend! It was such a helpful experience. I was unsure about what I wanted to do with my future, but after talking to everyone, I feel more confident about future career choices, along with the fact that I can actually survive after college!" Another wrote, "As the first of my family to graduate college looking for a professional job, Beyond the Gates has thoroughly established an extensive foundation on how to seek employment and succeed once employed."

To read one student's thoughts on the weekend, please see Spencer Foote's article in The Sewanee Purple.

The Beyond the Gates weekend is one of the most gratifying events we organize each year, thanks to the amazing students, alumni and parents who participate! Next year will be the 10th annual, and we can't wait!

These were some of the pieces of advice the four visiting alumni with careers in finance shared with students on Friday, September 14, 2012, during the Smith Career Conversations event. Students dined with the alumni, asked questions following a panel discussion, and many took advantage of the opportunity to sharpen their interview skills through practice interviews with the alumni.

We're grateful that alumni are willing to travel back to the mountain to share their experiences and advice with Sewanee students. The event is made possible once each semester thanks to a generous gift from Joel A. Smith, III C'67. Classes began today, and we have already hosted two events associated with a new year. Yesterday afternoon, our office hosted a Student Leaders' Summit where around 30 student leaders gathered to set goals for the year, network with each other, collaborate on their goals and hear from Dean of Students Eric Hartman about how to get things done on campus. The content for the afternoon was planned by a dozen students over a few lunch meetings in April, and it was great to see their planning benefit their fellow student leaders. (photos found below)

Last night, six returning students served on a panel for new students in a session entitled "Options and Opportunities." Students shared their experiences in working with a member of our staff, networking with alumni and participating in internships. Several new students have already made their way to our office to introduce themselves and to get started on plans for the future.

Today marked the annual Tonya Luncheon where Tonya Internship Board members get to enjoy lunch with the Tonya Public Affairs and Wilson Business & Economics interns. They also heard oral reports from five interns: three from public affairs and two from business & economics. Each year, the interns each submit a written report at the conclusion of their internships. An award is presented to the interns who submitted the top reports. This year's Outstanding Report in business & economics was written by Breck Pappas, and this year's Outstanding Report in public affairs was written by Courtney Hinkle with Olivia Schubert in second place.

Vice-Chancellor John McCardell wrote in the Summer 2011 issue of the Sewanee magazine:

"This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first endowed fund to support student internships. Established in 1981 by the Tonya Memorial Foundation of Chattanooga for internships in the field of public affairs, broadly defined, this fund has provided opportunities for almost 1,000 students to explore career possibilities.

The Tonya Foundation in 1985 endowed the Wilson Internship Program for Economics. To date almost 400 students have received internship funding from this endowment."

"Find a mentor for yourself and become a mentor to someone else. Paying it forward never felt so personally rewarding."

-Marichal Gentry, C'86 and keynote speaker at Beyond the Gates

Building skills and relationships are the overarching goals of Beyond the Gates: Preparing for Life and Work after Sewanee. Skills are taught in interviewing, searching for jobs, career readiness, graduate and professional school admission, networking etiquette and business dining etiquette. Students easily understand that they will gain these skills just from reading the weekend's agenda.

What is harder to convey until the weekend is experienced, though, is the level of interest and care that the alumni and parent participants have for them and for their future plans. Lisa Howick and I spend about a day and a half working to ensure that each student is carefully paired with a weekend mentor, a practice interviewer, and a table host, all of whom have some connection to a career or life interest of the student. A great deal of mentoring happens for each student, and relationships begin here that provide lasting value for each person.

Attendees are provided an in-depth directory of alumni and parents that doesn't merely list their current professional position but also details past jobs, graduate or professional schools attended, boards they serve on, organizations where they volunteer, prior cities they've lived in and regions of the country or the world of interest to them. Armed with this information, students seek out alumni/parent participants during networking breaks and even arrange to walk with a particular alum from building to building. There is the opportunity to find mentorship on a wide variety of topics.

In Marichal Gentry's keynote address, he encouraged us to "find a mentor" and to "become a mentor." After attending the weekend, 100 percent of the students say that their involvement in Beyond the Gates makes them want to help future Sewanee students. Since we're in the seventh year of the program, it's been fun to be able to see past student participants return as alumni, eager and ready to give back by helping current students. Beyond the Gates provides one more way for a "never-failing succession" of support to be created for Sewanee individuals.

"Students who have started their job search early, are flexible, and can express their skills and abilities in terms of how they add value to the organization will be in the best position to seize opportunities in this (still) very competitive job market. The best advice to students is:

BE FOCUSED, BE DIRECTED, and BE CONNECTED."

-Collegiate Employment Research Institute 2010-11 Executive Summary

This headline concisely states the philosophy we share with students on effective job search strategies. Sewanee students are very fortunate to have Sewanee alumni who are willing to "be connected" to them. A wonderful example of this premise in action occurred on Friday of Homecoming at our annual Student-Alumni Networking Luncheon.

Jay Faires C'85, former president of music and now consultant at Lionsgate, hosted a table of students interested in entertainment, media and marketing careers. In their conversation, he asked them to share their hopes and goals for their careers. One student shared her dream of interning at Nylon magazine. I don't know this because I was seated at the table. I know this because within the afternoon, Jay wrote the student and copied me to say that he had reached his connection there and that an internship at Nylon was hers. "Go live your dreams," the message ended.

I don't ascribe to the Woody Allen quip that "Ninety percent of life is just showing up." Sometimes, though, it's amazing to see what life brings you when you do.

Smith III. The annual September event focuses on careers in banking and the financial sector and seeks to prepare seniors for the upcoming round of fall interviews. The Babson Center for Global Commerce and Career & Leadership Development co-sponsor the event. This year's event was comprised of a networking luncheon, a panel discussion (pictured at right), simulated interview sessions, and a keynote talk by Sam Carroll, C'69 of Morgan Stanley.
